I HAD THE SHRIMP DINNER Saturday night. I still smell the aroma of the roasted finely ground corn meal batter on the extra large shrimp. They were deep fried to a golden color with a hint of brown on the tips of the last shell segment left on with the tail. Perfect. The abundant french fries were a little larger than McDonald's but not logs or wedges. Perfect again. It came with two large hush puppies of the sweet cornbread variety with seasoning and green onion. Aaaah. They must'a called my mother before I came! Much better than beer batter hush puppies. A small side salad came complete with fresh crisp lettuce, tomatoes, grated cheese, and a whole basket of every kind of crackers and croutons one could imagine. I'm not the only one impressed with the food at RaXX, cause there was a large party with a lot of tables pushed together, all dressed up in formal gowns and suits for homecoming. When I was in school, homecoming dinner was reserved for what was considered to be top of the line resturaunts. $12.95 for a seafood dinner at a highly regarded resturaunt, let alone extra large fried shrimp, is what most would call a bargain. There must be something terrific about the hamburgers, too, cause I noticed some amungst the seafood platters and steaks on the long banquet table. And, as I was getting up, the waitress was proudly carrying a big fat burger plated with a mound of french fries towards the smiling gentleman at the next table. Toby Ihli Picmedaddy.com
I Tried The Onion Rings with my half pound hamburger the Friday of the Holloween Costume Contest. Best onion rings I've ever had. Hot, fresh, sweet! A light, golden flour batter. Not the smooth finish, but the pebbley kind with the little brown tips on the lumps of the golden flour. The onions were very mild and sweet. The golden batter held together nicely due to the buttermilk wash and was crunchy, yet soft. Terrific.Margaret, the cook, smiled and was all too happy to take a minute and describe the way she carefully dipped the onion rings in the buttermilk, then in the flour, and back in the buttermilk before a final coating of flour. "Yep, double coating of buttermilk and flour, you HAVE TO DO IT TWICE!" Her personal pride in her art definitely reflected in the taste of them onion rings. The hamburger was very large and very good. But them onion rings were unforgettable! I can't get them out of my head. As a side, like with my hamburger, they're only two dollars. But I HIGHLY recommend paying the $5.25 for a LARGE BASKET and sitting in the corner by yourself with a cold drink and zoning out the rest of the world. You might need a go-box.
